THE SCIENCE BEHIND MODERN MEDICINE

Macro Biomaterials for Immunomodulation

Writer's picture: Ana ValentinAna Valentin

What is it?

Immunomodulation simply means the modulation of the body's immune system. This new study by Maxence Dellacherie, Bo Ri Sep, and David Mooney proposes the use of tiny macro scaled delivery devices to be placed only where necessary in the body to control the pharmacokinetics of immunomodulatory agents. These agents include small molecules, cells, and macromolecules.

Why does it matter?

Currently, to immunomodulate the treatment corrects hypoactive and hyperactive immunity but interferes with the homeostasis, or normal equilibrium, of the immune system at sites that do not need to be targeted. This leads to fatal side effects. By placing these small biomaterials close to the site, there is a reduction in side effects as the location treatment goes to can be better controlled. Immunotherapies are used to treat cancer and tissue repair within the body.
